Comedian Bright Okpocha, popularly known as Basketmouth, has poked fun at Nigeria’s political, religious, and security landscape by imagining alternate career paths he could have taken instead of comedy.
In a video shared on X on Tuesday, Basketmouth reflected on the 27 years he’s dedicated to his comedy career, suggesting that other pursuits might have paid off far more handsomely by now. He joked that if he’d spent those same 27 years in the military, he’d either be a general today — or dead, or kidnapped by bandits. Turning to a more cynical path, he suggested that dabbling in fraud and small-scale drug dealing, combined with a political career, could have landed him in the presidency itself.
He didn’t stop there. Correcting himself mid-joke, Basketmouth said that if he’d gone into “church business” — evangelism — he’d likely be a self-styled “Daddy G.O.” by now, complete with two private jets and his own university.
While he named no names, the comedian’s routine clearly gestured at real issues in Nigeria: the killing and kidnapping of senior military officers by bandits and terrorist groups, the extravagant lifestyles of some prosperity-gospel church leaders, and the political alliances between religious figures and President Bola Tinubu’s government.
The dig at drug trafficking and fraud also carries an unmistakable echo of Tinubu’s own past. In 1993, he forfeited $460,000 to U.S. authorities in connection with a narcotics investigation, and he has also faced a separate forgery allegation tied to a case in Chicago — controversies that have followed him since well before his 2023 election win.
